UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION DIVISION OF BOTANY LOS ANGELES 24, CALIFORNIA January h, 1951 Professor Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin Dear Professor Lederberg: Thank you very much for your letter of December 26. Your offer is very tempting, and I appreciate your mentioning it to mee I am interested in finding a permanent job in an institution which sponsers ree search. This is,,of course, the ideal job. However, if such a job were not-to turn up for this fall, and this is probable, I would want to consider some sort of postdoctoral research. I have applied to both NRC. and P.H.S. for a fellowship to go to Italy to work with Buzzati. From the way the world looks now Itm afraid that I shantt make it. Would it be possible for me to give you a definite answer regarding your offer early in March? By then I should know about most job opportunities and the fellowship. The Hecoli problem interests me very much and I would appreciate the chance to learn something about bacterial genetics, Thank you again for your consideratione Robert Paul Levine
