Thank you for your letter of May 28 with reference to Stlvio. —
I was especially happy to learn that you have been able to offer \
him a position ag Associate Professor, and as far as I am con-
cerned, I would be delighted to accept him here as a Visiting =
Associate Professor if this were the most appropriate arrangement, =
to continue the exciting work that you have inittated. However, mee
I really have to leave this principally in Dr. Shooter's hands, ok
since any commitments of laboratory space will have to be made Cy ~.
from his allocation. I think he is already in touch with Silvio Ry
and ne is probably more curently informed at this point than I an. te _
If it were possible for you to complete arrangements for an academic _
rank for him at Washington University it really would be of some ~ SS
benefit with respect to his position here, and I would encourage > ~

you to do so if it is at all convenient,even with the understanding
that it may leave some flexibility for Silvio's long-run plans,

I do not believe there should be any serious difficulty in obtaining
the necessary funds, and unless some other explicit trant funds were
available we could undertake to simply take over his salary at the
same level as would be ertablished for hin as a member of the Washing-
ton University faculty, This might be rather more difficult to do at we
a satisfactory level if he has to proceed ad initto through the pro~ —~2
cedures of faculty appointment here.
