WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SAINT LOUIS DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY EUCLID AVENUE AND KINGSHIGHWAY April 10, 1959 Dr. Joshua Lederberg 433 Gerona Road Stanford University Campus Stanford, California Dear Josh: I wanted to tell you that I'm going abroad for a month and wondered whether our paths might cross and if so whether we'd be more successful in meeting than in Bombay. A U.S. biochemistry mission to Russia is organized to get even with a trip made here last year by a Russian group. I could'nt resist the temptation of going. Carter (H.E. ยป Bloch, Davis, Lehninger and I are leaving Washington on April 2kth for Moscow 'via' Stockholm. I'll be back about a month later. I've tried at long range to be helpful in the operations of the Chemistry and Medicine selectievt committees. You probably know better than I how these negotiations are proceeding. I'll check some time next week but let me know if there is something in particular I should do. I guess you've already assumed I know too little about Elizabeth Russell to offer any comment. I also know nothing about Szwarc. Should the Johnson negotiations break down - and I won't be depressed if they do ~ there are other possibilities that are reasonably attractive and Szware surely deserves attention. We've been having fun with both the polymerase and phage enzymesand I'm looking forward to exchanging notes with you very soon. We'll pack up the lab from May 28th to June 2nd, our home on June 9th and should be landing on the beaches around June 15th. As ever, fort Arthur Kornberg. AK/pb
