We spent a very pleasant hour or so in conversation, discussing problems which you and I talked over while I was in Palo Alto. The visit was quite pleasant and very interesting but I don't think it lead anywhere as far as more practical consideration of our discussions are concerned. They invited me to stop in their office again when I am in Washington and I shall certainly do so. They may perhaps communicate to you more about their future plans concerning their interests in pharmaceutical, biological and "tabacum!" fields. I have received a reply from the Surgeon General to the letter which I have sent to him and I am forwarding a copy of this to you. Itisa semi-satisfactory reply although he does seem to take away the stigma of "exclusiveness" of using certain strains only for the preparation of polio- virus vaccines. LY SAI day hey yy I had an interesting visit with J. F. A. P. Miller (an unusual combination of initials for a Frenchman raised in Australia; he was probably given J. F. at birth and A. P. were added during his Australian sojurn). He showed data on animals thymectomized as newborns which apparently failed on many occasions to react to a homograft or heterograft. We are studying such animals from the point of view of auto-sensitization but, as yet, the results are not very convincing. However, we may not have a complete thymectomy. We will repeat these experiments. It would be really fun if it can be shown that a mammal, thymectomized at birth, cannot be sen- sitized. THE WISTAR INSTITUTE PHILADELPHIA 4, PA.
