THE WISTAR INSTITUTE THIRTY-SIXTH STREET AT SPRUCE PHILADELPHIA 4, PA. HILARY KOPROWSKI, M.D. PHONE: BARING 2-6700 DIRECTOR CABLE ADDRESS: WISTARINST January 22, 1962 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford University Medical Center Palo Alto, California Dear Josh: It is only a few weeks since you were here but I have not had time even to catch my breath and write to you about developments that have occurred since you left. First, I have learned that Alan Granoff is definitely looking for a position. I have mentioned to him through an intermediary (Werner Henle) that he should contact you. Granoff is an able individual who thinks in quantative terms in biological research. I understand that he is not a genius but that he is a very reliable worker and if you need a man specializing in Virology who would conduct such type of research, you may perhaps want to consider him, He is now despondent because of the death of his wife and he must now take care of his three children. I ath sure the climate in Palo Alto would be much more conducive to recovery from grief than any we could offer in the East and this might appeal to him strongly. I have written to Tyroler that I expect to be in Washington January 3lst and we have an appointment to meet in his office at 3:30 that afternoon. I will let you know the outcome. We are starting experiments in macrophages or lymphocytes and checking to see if we will be able to express the peripolesis re- action in quantative terms. I am following the Nossal schedule in mice and hope that we will get a larger percentage of cells labeled than he did in order to get clear-cut results of peripolesis reaction. If I can be of any further help to you with your parents, don*t hesitate to ask. Let me know what you decide ultimately. Warmest regards to you and Esther.
