INST. FOR TUMORBIOLOGI KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET STOCKHOLM 60 DEPT. OF TUMOR BIOLOGY KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET STOCKHOLM 60 Stockholm, April 10, 1961 Professor Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford University Medical Center Palo Alto, Calif, USA Dear Josh: I am sorry to trouble you with a few minor questions, but the date of our departure is getting nearer and there are various things to settle. We very much hope to see you here in a few weeks time, in which case please ignore this letter. If you do not come, however, we should appreciate it if you could enlighten us on these points, If you are very short of time, as I presume you mst be, perhaps you could give the answers to Révész and he could convey them to us. These are the questions: 1) Eva is presently taking a laboratory course in basic bacterial and bagsterio- phage genetics with Bertani. She is just delighted with it. She would very much like to know whether you would have any suggestionsregarding any special reading she should do or any special technique she could learn from Bertani, in order to prepare herself adequately for the stay, 2) We just received a letter from Mrs, Levin. She describes their house and the equipment in detail, It sounds just perfect from all points of view and we are very grateful to Esther and you for all the trouble you have taken in getting it for us, One question arises with regard to a deposit of 500 dollars which they would like to have in advancé on our arrival. This is slightly problematic since the amount of currency we can get here for the trip is limited and we shall also have to buy a car immediately after arrival. Also, I suppose that salaries are payed in Stanford at the end of each month, as everywhere else, and we shall have to take currency along to cover the costs of living for the first month, I am not sure whether we can manage to have this much currency in advance. As far as the deposit for the house goes, do you think that it would be possible to get an advance on our salaries to cover this or would this be very difficult and involve very much red tape? If the latter is the case, I shall do my best to try to arrange it in some other way. At any rate, I would appreciate it if you would let me know what economic plans we should make for the first month, so that we do not cause you unnecessary inegonvenience, 3) After your letter of January 19, we have arranged so as to arrive to San Francisco on June 16. Mrs. Levin now writes that they will be leaving already the 10th. Do you think that we should change our travel plans? It makes really no difference for us; we should like first and foremost to make plans so as to suite your convenience best, They are returning on September 8 which will pro- pably have to be the date when we leave, ~ Professor J, Lederberg . -2- Stockholm, April 10, 1961 4) This is no question, but just a point of information. It now seems that we shall be able to leave the baby here in good hands. This will give considerably more freedom to us than otherwise would have been possible. With warm greetings, Yours as ever, pony George Klein P.S. We have not heard from any arrangements that Ted Hauschka should have made for us, and, frankly, I am not too terribly keen to go to Buffalo and listen for several days of reproaches and ressentiments of all kinds because of all the neglect we and our various co-workers displayed in not quoting Ted when he feels he should have been quoted. This is just the kind of thing Eva had to listen to during her entire visit to Buffalo. She came home very unhappy. So, unless quite necessary, I would rather make some economic sacrifice. Other invitations have come but I have been declining them mostly, since I should like to concentrate on whatever we can possibly achieve at Stanford, One exception is the Gordon Research Conference between August 28 and September 1 to which I have agreed, I hope that this is all right with you.
