‘INST. FOR TUMORBIOLOGI > KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET / Ll, ~ STOCKHOLM 60 DEPT. OF TUMOR BIOLOGY KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET STOCKHOLM 60 Stockholm, December 8, 1959 Professor Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics School of Medicine Stanford University Palo Alto California USA Dear Joshua: Many thanks for your letter of December 1. I am afraid to have been repetitive with regard to the 1.5 million crowns which you of course heard about when you were here giving your lecture. It is still the same grant and we are going full steam ahead with the planning, which actually does not take too much of my time since I try to distribute the responsibility to more competent hands than my own, every time I possibly can. We have been thinking very deeply about the Summer prospect of 1961, It is certainly extremely attractive and there is nothing I would like more than to stay in an atmosphere which is represented by yourself and Esther, Kornberg, Kaplan, etc. It is almost too good to be true! So, in spite of our home worries I think you are right and the best thing is to makea point of it and have other things come second place. 50, if you feel like it, I am ready to start with the arrangements on this end. It would be, of course, very nice if Eva could come with me and I am sure that we can manage to get a certain support for her here, The greater problem is presented by the children, The small baby we must and, I suppose, will be able to leave somewhere here, although the details cannot be foreseen now. As to the older children, Peter is quite independent now, and he would just love to come (we have discussed this yesterday with him). He could manage very well if we could leave him during the day in a Kindergarten or a school, or with some nice family in a suitable place. As to our second child, the problem with her is sreater since she is not as independent as Peter, but this can change much in the course of two years. One possibility would be to leave her in Norway, but Eva would of course prefer to take her along too. This we Stockholm, December 8, 1959 may discuss later, Personally, I think that my efficiency would be greater if Eva were with me,and hers if one or two children were within reach, provided that we could organize this properly. Of course, the problem is also a financial one, I do not recall our discussion in this respect in detail since, I have Waves Hotes of it. We have now decided to buy a house which is presently being built and will be ready next May. This puts us in serious debt for the next fifteen years at least. For this reason, we shall have to obtain adequate coverage for the trip of Eva and myself. As mentioned earlier, however, I am sure that we can count on a certain home support. It would be valuable to know, however, on what terms we should start to prepare the ground. I am looking forward very much to seeing Kornberg this afternoon and to his lecture on Friday. I was glad to learn that you were happy about the price this year! I was sure it would please you. I am afraid there is still nothing to be heard about Laci’s visa. This puts us in a rather difficult situation since, our erants running from January 1st to December 31st, I have to apply for his salary for the whole next year now. This will cause some embarrassment if and when he receives the visa, but there is nothing else to be done. The Consul here is absolutely incommuni- cative. Thank you very much about your very kind invitation to visit you during 1960. I do not have any plans to go to the States during the year, but if anything turns up, I shall certainly let you know.
