Dear Joshua:

I hope that you have completed the moving now and feel settled
and happy in California. We shall be looking forward very much to
seeing you in Stockholm in May. Could you not plan to stay a little
longer than usual? We should be very happy if we could spend some
time with you at more leisure than on the previous occasions.

I have just returned from another brief trip to the States
and had long talks with Zinder and Hotchkiss. Zinder was very much
interested in our proposition which finally came to a full professor’s
salary ($ 8.000 per year, the maximum salary for a Swedish scientist),
travel expenses for him and his family and one or two full time
technicians. Both he and Mrs. Zinder seemed to be happy about it and
were interested to come and Hotchkiss seemed to be very positive.
However, the President, Detlev Bronk sad absolutely no. Perhaps we
or Zinder made a mistake in not contacting him first directly. On the
other hand, my letter to Zinder was more,tentative question, trying
to find out whether he was interested at all and we could have con-
ducted all the official correspondence with Bronk later on, had we
known about its necessity. As far as I understood from Norton, there
is nothing to be done about it at the present stage. My next question
is again to yout whom would you recommend now? I have tentatively
approached Gtinter Stent whom I met in Texas and he sounded interested.
Do you think this would be a good idea? If you would have any
objections, or if he would not be able to come, whom would you
recommend?
