February 24, 1958 Professor George Klein Department of Tumor Biology Karolinska Institutet Stockholm 60, Sweden Dear George: Thank you for yours of ths 18th. Esther and I would very much like the opportunity of submitting abstracts but it happens that we are both just in the midst of soms rather exciting experiments. If we can have a few weaks more, we can promise to send you the abstracts. You can, if you like, re- serve space for them now if that would help you. As to the financial arrangements, I am happy to say that I was informed of a grant for $500.00 from the AIBS. We can probably manage to get expenses between here and New York from local sources though this is not yet certain. There still remains a very considerable gap before we will approach the basic travel cost for the two of us. We are prepared to take some of this out of pocket, but I am sure you can anticipate this situation. I am rather uncertain whether we will be able to take advantage of the charter flight which has been organized by the Society of American Bacteriologists. That would have saved us about $75.00 each. To summarize, we can anticipate a total expense, calcu— lated from New York, of about $1150.00. This will at least give you som idea of the extent of the deficit. I might suggest now that you contact Kauffmann or Zrskov in Copenhagen as I will be more than willing to speak there and it may be possible to reduce the deficit by some honorarium from them. If you are willing to take the trouble it might be more politic for you to approach them than for me to do so. Unless you have somathing that you would like to do in Knoxville on the evening of April 5, why don't you join us for the return trip. It is true we will be a little busy, especially greeting other people coming to the symposium, but perhaps you would not mind helping us in that task. The plane connections between Knoxvilie and Madison are rather dreary in any case and I am sure the company would liven up the trip. Yours cordially as ever, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Medical Genetics JL/ew
