DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE 6 BETHESDA 14, MD. NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH February 2, 1958 Dr. Joshua Lederberg The University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture Department of Genetics Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Josh: You are right about your little footnote. It didn't occur to me that there could be a problem. I have used up my money for meetings and I am barred from extramural grants. I happened to have a chat with Bill Consolazio of the National Sétence Foundation about another matter and brought up this problem. He said that there may presumably be a chance of National Science Foundation reimbursing the University of Wisconsin for paying the expenses of NIH scientists participating in the meeting. Perhaps I am the only one or, at least, the only one who has problems as usual, You had better check with Bill Consolazio rather than take my word for it, but perhaps you have various devices anyhow as to how to solve this problem. I am in the midst of work on your mutal of 'gal 3' (3264). I have been growing it on mineral medium containing glycerol or glycerol plus galactose as carbon source. I am trying to improve methods so that they are more accurate in the assessment of leaky mutants. Interestingly enough it seems, in this case, that the UDPGal-4-epimerase is present in considerably larger amounts in the population grown on galactose glycerol as carbon sources than in glycerol alone. This is, so far, the only point which is at variance with Kiyoshi's findings in nutrient medium. We have also some promising studies on yeast 4-epimerase. I shall write you fairly soon about these problems. Kindest regards to you and Esther from both of us. Sincerely yours, ve ‘ ' ny Se He. ty’ pe Herman M.
