Montreal, March 30th, 1958 Dear Dr Lederberg, I've seen your beautiful article in J. Bacteriol., and you can imagine I was very much interested in it. There was already much need of such a comprehensive study in this field and, as far as I am concerned, I enjoyed very much its synthetic conception. I should be very glad to obtain reprints of both this and other papers you published since last April, when last we exchanged letters. I hope, I did'nt [sic] offend you, that you did'nt [sic] answer to my letter of April, 1957. I work now with a Tb hospital and study the atypical forms, protoplasts etc. of BCG and want to carry out genetic experiments, too, although they seem extremely difficult in view of the slow multiplication and other known characteristics of microbacteria. I read with interest the different and controversial views as expressed by different authors on the existence of cell wall or rather cell wall components of protoplasts. I send you now some electron micrographs, which I made by the courtesy of Dr. [ . . . ] Rosenberg in Bratislava, in the Virology Institute of the Slovakian Academy of Sciences, in 1956, and which might be of some interest to you. They show, in contrast to those [END PAGE ONE] [BEGIN PAGE TWO] of [ . . .] Quillen's (Biochem. Biophys [ . . .] number), that after the completion of the effect of penicillin there is no morphological remainder of cell wall on the protoplasts, which later reappear in the reversion process. We never published our serial electron micrographs, as we could not complete them during my one week stay in the above Institute. After inspection send me the photos back, please. As soon as my preliminary note on the atypical forms of ACG appears in Nature, I send you a copy of it. Very sincerely yours Stephen Juhasz M.D. P.S. Photo I. ASPK 330 and I.
