June 1, 1958 Dear Josh and Esther, I enclose two pictures of Dr. Ryan. They were taken at his apartment room. I found the culture of SW577 (described as 90% curly) changes phase between curly and normal. That is, the culture is curly in phase 1 (i) and normal in phase 2 (1.2). The strain seems to be a mutant of H1-Ah1 region. The detailed genetic analysis is in progress. As Dr. Kerridge in this lab has found, the replacement of p-phenylalanin by p-fluro phenylalanin at the regeneration of flagella in phenylalanin requiring mutants of T142 + SW1061 causes the production of curly flagella. If the similar mechanism is involved in the curl in SW577, the strain might have a modified ability to incorporate a specific amino acid into H1-protein. Best regards to the people in the lab. Sincerely yours Tetsuo Iino
