CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PASADENA, CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF BIOLOGY November 1, 1960 6:30 P.M. Dear Josh: I have been racking my brain trying to remember where I got the idea that the second NERV emperiment has already been flown. I am certain now that I got this impression from talking to Dick Young at your house last Saturday evening. I believe he told me then that the Neuyospora part of the experiment had already been repeated and that it seemed to be giving the same results as the first time. I think you were in on the conversation. The way in which the NERV proposal was rushed to Mel Calvin for a snap judgement, without any opportunity for committee discussion, also indicates that the experiment was already on the launching pad. This doesn't make the situation any better, of course, but I do want you to understand that the decision to fly these experiments in no way represents the considered judgement of our committee. All the evidence indicates that that decision had already been made by NASA. I am sorry you had such an unpleasant day, and hope that the next time you come down to Cal Tech we will do better on the weather. Yours y Tn Norman Horowitz
