MEES & ZOONEN, DELFT Dr. Josh. Lederberg, Department of Genetics, University of California, Berkeley 4 (Cal.), U.S.A. our rer: JCH/223 DELFT, July 4th, 1962 HOLLAND Dear Dr. Lederberg, You may recall that we met a number of years ago, when I still lived in Milwaukee, where we visited your laboratories et Madison together with my great teacher Dr, A.J. Kluyver. Since that time I have returned to Jolland and at present I am connected with the Royal Netherlands Fermentation Industries as a Research Director. We have a little problem and I wonder - whether I may ask your advise on it. Our research organization lacks a genetic section and since we feel that microbial genetics will become more and more important in industrial microbiological research we want to organize such a section around a young graduate at present emoloyed by us whom we want to give a thorough education in general microbial genetics (yeast - fungi as well as actindmycetes) , may be for his Ph.D. degree. F P14) Va ypo ( 2 play v9.5 00H £ f > , The question is where and under whose guidance? Since the costs involved in sending him for several years to the U.S.A. are rather formidable we would prefer some European University, however, it has to be a highly reputable Genetic Department where he can learn not only the present techniques of obtaining desirable mutants but also where a good basis is given whereupon he can build the future developments of micro- bial genetics. Your comments would be greatly appreciated, preferably at your earliest convenience since the time for making necessary preparation for registration for next semester is getting short. With kindest personal regards, Yours sincerely, Dr. J.C. Hoogerheide Research Director Biopharmaceutical Dept.
