Dear Sir,

‘ I am enciosing a paper entitled "n infective
facter controlling sex compatibility in Escherichia coli" which
was written in collaboration with Drs.J.Lederberg and ©.M.Le-
derberg of Madison,Wiseonsin. The rather ourious coincidence hap-
pened,that similar phenomena agere observed almost at the same
ti e in both our laboratories,and in Dr.Haves's laboratory ,Post-
graduate Medical School,London. It was then agreed to publish,.
both Hayes's and our joint paper on the same Journal,possibly
on the same issue.

I should be grateful if you would consider the
enclosed paper for publication on the gournal of General Misro~
biology. I am forwarding this manusoript to you through the cour-
tesy of Dr.Hayesa, whd has also kindly agreed to act on our be~
half for correcting proofs.
