CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS COLD SPRING HARBOR, LONG ISLAND, N.Y. July 31, 1947 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Osborn Botanical Laboratory New Haven, Connecticut Dear Lederberg: It was kind of you to write me concerning a reference that you have considered including in your yrojected review of Lindegren's yeast work, You really need have no cause to be concerned with such a reference as the statements that I have made have been purely verbal. It was very generous of you, however, to think of it. Ly analysis of the data occurred in this way. I saw Lindegren's paper in manuscript form and at that time worked through the data on a volysomie basis to see if it would apply. Considering our knowledge of genetics, his cytogene hypothesis seemed fantastic when built upon such limited evidence. The polysomic analysis worked out well enough, considering the limited data. in extended analysis would have cleared the picture considerably. T have made, however, ro formal statement concerning yossible volyploid or polysonic inheritance to exolain nis results. Please don't feel that you must give me credit. It is not necessary. “ith vest regards to you and Esther, Sincerely yours, Gotu UBtuhed Rarbara NeClintock
