This is to tell you that we are still in New York and shall leave tomorrow by TWA plane.  As I had anticipated, my Milan director asked me to stay over a few more days to get him information on polys.  I shall therefore be able to reply more fully your letter only from Italy.
I have seen Szybalski in New Brunswick a few days ago.  His experiments are apparently unreproducible with any sample of streptomycin or dihydrostreptomycin other than the one he has originally employed, and of which he has still only a small amount left.  The active sample is Merck's streptomycin 1948.  However, Norton has been able to reproduce the experiment in salmonella with some kind of streptomycin he has (not all dihydro does not work).  Szybalski has not tested his "induced" StR for [ . . . ] to the "spontaneous" one; his data on [ . . . ] are probably not decisive as he has apparently not tested linkage with Mal.  I shall make some [ . . . ] with his induced StR.
