Dear Joshua,

I am back to work after a considerable waste of time
with Congresses etc, The Microbiology papers in collaboration
were satisfactory. I limited my exposition for the resistance
paper to replica plating and chlorhamphenicol and there were
no interesting comments afterwards. Eagle seems to stick to
his ppinion concerning small differences of resistance. The
paper for the Genetic Section at Rome was on F+ and I also
gave a short account of my work with Jinks. Other contribu=
tions on K-12 were by Rowley and collaborators on valine and
norleucine resistance and by Fredericq on a peculiar colicine
production factor, Stocker's paper was quite good. I did not
write my own for the Microbiology as I had no time for it.
Shall we write something in extenso for the final Proceedings
of the Microbiology, or leave for it the abstract in its pre=
sent form? The deadline is Nov.30, but I think it could be
easily accepted later. I should like to know your reaction
about this.

I am enclosing copy of the paper with Jinks which I
gave at the Genetics Congress, A full paper will be prepared
goon. I shall obviously like to know your opinion about it.

Concerning my immediate programs: we shall be doing
some more genetical work and concerning the citology I may
eventually sit down to make observations in viro. However,
1 shall keep you informed, We have also started on Shigellas;
sofar nothing definite. I hope you will let me know about
developments in your laboratory.

Concerning my prospective stay at your laboratory, two
possibilities, N.I.H. and W.H.O. have practically failed and
I am left with two others, Fulbright and Rockefeller, which
I shall try to pursue. I am also inquiring on the possibili=
ty of choosing a period that might fit you a little better,
i.e. October -— December '54, It was very kind of you to re=
quire pictures of myself to members of the Genetics Congress,
Miss Byers in particular. I am sorry I have never reciprocated
your kind sending of a picture, but I tend to forget the exi=
stence of cameras.

should have been mailed for you. I am sorry there is a constant
