NEW YORK UNIVERSITY-BELLEVUE MEDICAL CENTER NEW YORK UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE 550 FIRST AVENUE, NEW YORK 16, N.Y. DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY March 1, 1957 OREGON 9-3200 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Joshua: I was digppointed not to see you last week in Evanston . I was particularly sorry to hear you weren't feeling well, and I hope nothing will interfere with your enjoying your trip to Europe. “TT haven't written to you for a long while because the protoplast story bogged down into a lot of trivialities. It turns out that the DAP-less protoplasts are a good deal tougher than those created by penicillin. Surprisingly, during prolonged incubation with sucrose and in DAP the prepaygtion of fragt units, after reading the maximum of 95-98% at about two hours, then decrea#es to as low as 50%. Yet during this period growth has ground to a halt and the units remain nice’and spherical. I understand you are going to Paris soon, and I will probably see you there a few days before the London meeting. My travel plans still aren't quite final. As you may know, we have here at N.Y.U. an Honors Program to encourage selected first and second year students to get interested in research. Each Saturday morning they get a lecture designed primarily to show them how exciting research can be. It has been a very succesful program and some speakers have included Rollin Hotchkiss, Dubos, and Boris Magasanik, as well as local talent. There is an honorarium attached for outsiders and if you could manage this on a Saturday morning, either going to Europe or returning, we would love to have you." In any case, I hope you will be sptdping in New York on your way to Europe, and Liz and I would love to have you and Esther stay with us. We cannat absolutely guarant@z quiet, but on the whole Frankie has been extraordinarily kind.7# See you soon. Sincerely, Bernard D.
