ca TONS Bacteriology Department Melbourne University Vic., Australia / Dear Mr. Hunter: BY 3/ o4 My wife and I are down here in Australia for a brief tour ona Rimbxr Fulhright grant. While we were in Brisbane, a few days ago, we Came across this article (clipping enclosed) which we thought would interest you and the readers of your editorial and university news columns. ; The article speaks for itself & has an interesting contrast to the role of the University of Wisconsin in the life of our state. Queensland University is a State xe institution, almost entirely financed out of PPYSEN A POU. Oy tax revenues, Several academic people that we talked to indicated that the university policy of the previous Labor government was ons of tha issues involved in its recent upset, though probably the most important was simply a split in its ranks, us much on personal as on doctringaire &ssues. Nonetheless, the overturn was hardly less astonishing than | Bill Proxmire's recent success. One moral is that, in various circumstances, academic freedom can be imperilled by political interzference from the Left as much as from the Right.
