Dear Joshua,

As you probably know, or could guess from my age,
I retire at the end of this year and active moves are on foot to find
my successor, I have no formal say in the appointment but I have
authority from our Vice-Chancellor to obtain what advice I can from
my friends, Personally, lam keen that Gus. Nossal should get the
job and, if you agree that he is a good man for it, I should be most
grateful if you could let me have something in a letter that I could pass
on to the committee concerned. Quite apart from anything directly
to do with his scientific status, any impressions in regard to his
competence in administrative matters, or his acceptability in the
American scientific environment, could be helpful.

I thought of your exobiological activities when I
went out to Grumman Aviation last May and climbed into the Lunar
Excursion Module mock-up. It made the business seem almost real!
