Dear Joshua:

Thank you very much for your letter which is most understanding. I am, of
course, anxious to make this strain available. Actually, this is not exact-

ly the original strain which we have described; however, what is important is that
the progeny, being able to transfer this 'F' are just as. useful, and these are
certainly available.

in any case, I have tried to think of a suitable way of referring to the origin
of the strain, but have come to the conclusion that the less said the better,
let me thank you again for your letter of communication which we were pleased
to.uge. The work that was described in the paper is all. that we have done on
Hfr Salmonella, except that one of my associetds, Warren Carey, has an interest-
ing cross: ST=2 x Serratia marscesens,: the progeny become Hfr for Lac as usual:
Se marscesens hybrid x 1M-98'-2 gives Lac+ Se typhimurium.

As to Aleck Bernstein, since this is a Government agency, we are unable to hire
non-citizens except under unusual circumstances. This is unfortunate for I
really think that the difficult personne] problem in Govt work could be helped
appreciably if this restriction did not exist.

Your comment on BW hits: the nail on the head} Our diploid type typhoid hybrids
which cross-react with coli serolegically and are biochemically very much like
coli would fit the bill, perhaps. Probably any Lac+ typhoid would do the
tricke

If the opportunity presents itself, I should enjoy a short visit with you and
Esther (and the climate). I will check into this later, since I just returned
from a trip to Denver,
