Dear Tracy:

I write to you once more concerning the pos-
sibilities for Bodenstein in your Dept. I found
out that he is extremely vexed of his present sit-
utation, doing uninteresting and apparently useless
routine work in a mosquito control project, without
any chance to do research even at night. He is
@ man who puts all hism ambition in research wmork,
and is getting in awfully low spirits. Do you
think}that it would be of any avail to try to push
his case with Dean Payne thwough some outside peo-
ple (like Dunn, or others), under whatever form
you may think useful? Do you feel that there is
some chance for him, and that you would approve
of his appointment if it were question of it? Tf
do not know at all the situation in your Dept.,
but I really feel that it would be a very good
acquisition to get a man like Bodenstein with
an interest in foundamental biology, and now availa-
ble fax at any condition, whereas later it may
become increasingly difficult to get good men
due to reneweé competibions from other schools,
Could you answer the above as soon as possible?
Bodenstein is due here shortly Zor a couple of
days, and if you suggest it I may talk to him
and indicate him the proper steps.

The crowd here is very interesting. Dobzhansky
is here, and Jack Schultz, and Curt Stern id ex-
pected shortly. If you come East between semesters
you should spend a few days here.

As you probably have heard, I got my promotion
for which I am very grateful to Cleland and to
all others who approved of it. I am feeling quite
well now, and hope to be practically back to nor-
mality by the end of the sunmer. -
