JAN 9 1967 INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA 47405 DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY AREA CODE 812 JORDAN HALL 222 TEL. NO. January 6, 1967 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Stanford University Medical Center Palo Alto, California Dear Josh: Your letter was most welcome. I too have felt that we have lost contact and have felt it for a long time and for all of that time have regretted it deeply. The news about you and Esther had already reached me and I had quickly gotten over the initial shock for I am not unaware of how dif- ficult it is for outsiders to understand what goes on between husband and wife, even in the cases of those couples who seem to be so admirably suited to one another. You both have my warmest and best wishes for very-satisfactory readjustment. , I don't know whether Joe Muller has answered your letter yet, possibly he did before he went to the hospital. You should know that he has been in the hospital since December 21 and went through a very rough time for a couple of weeks, but is now beginning to get into reasonably good shape again. He of course has a bad physical condition to contend with and this underlies everything else, but on top of it the mental anguish that he is experiencing in not being able to do what he wants to do is adding greatly to the difficulties. In his case it seems that a mental readjustment will be a main difficulty and also the main need. Thea is much encouraged now by his condition for the last few days and we hope that before very much longer he can come back to Bloomington to his home. This year I am on Sabbatical and am traveling not at all. So at least for one year I will be in your category in that respect. For the following year I have already taken on more than I should and none of the commitments brings me to the West Coast. So I do not know when our paths will cross, but I am at least happy to know that we share the feeling of regret for the past interference with communication between us and that perhaps augurs well for an alteration in the years ahead, I hope so. ‘YL!
