1086 East 160 Street, New York,N.Y., July 6,1942. Dr. Frank H. Stodola, Dept of Organic Chemistry, Columbia University, Dear Sir: Although I haa plannea to work all summer, I find myself attracted by tne poscibilities of your Chem s42C course, I shouia not trouble to write you except that I anticipate some technical difficulties in the manner of satis- faction of prerequisites. Last January, with Prof. Nelson's permission, I was able to pass the final exam in Chem 41 as an achievment exam on the bast of personal self-instruction for several years. I haverhad no other chem courses in Columbia College, but in high school learned the rudiments of yguelitative analysis. Ky main interests are in physiologicel cBemistry- for the last few months I had been working at Columbia on enzyme-inhititors and sneir errect on mitosis in the onion root-tip- so tnat my laboratory experi- ence in Chem 41 material may not be quite up to par. I have prepared a few compounds,however- acetaldehyde, methyl orange, Magneson I (dinitrobenzene- azoresorcinol) and other simple preps. However,I plan to spend some evenings this month brushing up on tnat technique at a very weli-equppped home lab of ea friend. Under these circumstances,do you anticipate any daitriculty in ac- cepting me into your course, Chems42C with creait for the Goliege? Prelimina ry remarks ty my coliege adviser indicate no aifiiculty there. Sincerely yours, / Joshua Bebb
