UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY BERKELEY 4, CALIFORNIA June 16, 1958 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Medical Genetics University of Wisconsin School of Medicine Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear.Josh: Thank you for your long letter about the various possibilities with which you are confronted, I still would like very much to have you on this campus, but if Stanford is to be the choice, this would get you at least into the neighbor- hood. In regard to your questions, I have very little to offer. I do not know of any particular caution to urge in respect to Stanford, I am not acquainted with its administrative setup nor much with the individuals in the medical school, but I have certainly never heard anything unfavorable and would imagine that this is a very good place to work. I have no suggestions to make regarding a younger worker in mammalian genetics either, with a research interest in genetics of somatic cells. Silvers name would have come to mind perhaps, but there must be others and you, I am sure are more acquainted with them than I. Nor do I have a suggestion for a genetically oriented pediatrician. The Berkeley campus as you know is too far away from the Medical School to give me much contact with it and furthermore, my interests in human genetics are more those of an onlooker and reviewer than of one too active in the field. -_ I am looking forward to seeing you either at Montreal or in September, when you expect to come through here again. — As you perhaps know, Jim Jenkins wishes to be relieved of the Chairmanship of the Genetics Department, a matter which I hope will be solved by asking him to continue anyway. As long as this uncertainty exists, the plans of the Genetics Department cannot be formlated too clearly. I myself, do not wish to "throw ny weight" in pushing things and have to wait for developments. Where my wishes are- you know. With kind regards to Esther and you, Sincerely yours, Cae Curt Stern CS/sm
