Dear Dean Sevringhaus,

The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for “edical itesearch has renewed
my fellowship for one year from this debe, so that I can continue my
research here for that time, after which, of course, I hope to resume
my medical studies at P+S. At Professor Tatum's suggesticn, I am registering
in the graduate school, in the department of icrobiology, so that
this work can be regarded as a dissertation, and it is possible that
I may be awarded a doctorate before I return. I have received no¥ formal
notice that my request for a leave of absence hes been approved, but
have gone ehead with these other plans on the tacit assumption that it would
be. I would greatly appreciate your reassurance on the matter.

In addition, I had been awarded a N.Y. State ‘iar Service Scholarship
which should be held in abeyance. Finally, could you find out for me
the status of my ‘Eligibility Certificate! under the 'GI Bill+! I hoped
to be able to use that for my medical education.

The research has led to the almost irrefregable conelusion that
there is a sexual process in some bacteria (notablg Sscherichia coll),
and we are now expanding our program to survey orgahhsms of medical impor-
tance, in which this finding would have en obvious bearing on epidemiological
and dhemotherapeutic problems.
