UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY April 20, 1949 BERKELEY 4, CALIFORNIA Dr, Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin Dear Josh: Thank you for your very interesting letter, Your story about the adaptation of lactose fermentation by growth in butyl galactoside is near- ly incredible, I hope to be able to help you with some of these fascinating phenomena that you are uncovering, J have received a Guggenheim Fellowship and want to spend the first two or three months with you, My plans corres- pond closely to your preferences in that I want to come there early in Au- gust and stay until about October, Please let me know if this is convenient, We are continuing the studies on the coli-mutant but have no definite results yet, Maybe I shall have something interesting to tell you in Cin- cinatti, Have you seen the latest paper by Monod in which he shows the reversi-~ bility of the amylomaltase reaction? We have been scooped twice now, this time because of the slovenly action of the J,B.C. I don't remember if I told you that they kept the manuscript for two months until I asked about it and then they said that they were very interested in tite paper but that the Giscussion weakened the report, so would I shorten’the discussion, I de- cided to hell with them and cut almost the entire discussicn out. I have not yet received proofs, I shall send you a culture of T, monosa as soon as I have a transfer made, Looking forward to seeing you in May, I am Sincerely yours, Michael Doudoroff MD:hb
