Dear Dr. Lederberg:

In response to your letter of February 5 we have
made another search for letters concerning the research of th
work of 0. T. Avery in 1944; bue without finding anything use-
ful to you.

We do have the correspondence and papers of Milislav
Demerec. They fill seventeen file boxes, I have looked in them
for correspondence with Avery, MeCleod and ieCarthy; but again
have drawn a blank. There is correspondence about conferences
and symposia which Dr. Demerec organized but, rather unaccount-
ably, these materials run through 1945 and start again in 1950;
the gap covers precisely the year you are interested in.

We do have a list of Demerec's correspondents. If
you will check the names of persons with whom he may have

corresponded on the subject of Avery's work, we can check those
letters for you.

The correspondence of F. J, Ryan and of David Bonner
is not in this Library, nor do there appear to be any letters
of theirs in other scientists! papers we do have. I am afraid
I can tell you nothing at all about the Ryan and Bonner papers,
where they may be, if they survive; or what happened to them,
if they were destroyed or abandoned.

Please give me some additional clues or points on
which to focus, so that we can search the collections intelli-
gently and effectively for you.
