207 Remarks at NYAM, 9/9/02: "One year after 9/11: What have we learned and where do we go from here? Lesson of 9/11.... Evanescence of civility; local is global. What I learned on 9/11/01: World is not at peace, and our homeland is not insulated. Not only the economy, but the venues of human conflict are globalized. Smaller groups, even individuals can make war. We do well to shore up our security, to recognize the vulnerabilities of our cities, our complex economy, our social order. We have no choice but to fight back, to contain and deter malicious enemies, to reduce the motivations for violence, in every way we can. I am perplexed how we can do that and preserve our soul as a liberal, democratic society. Our own actions in self defense will put many innocents at risk. There is one step we can take as an earnest of our humanity, and that is to undertake global health as part of our compaign to exalt global civility.
