CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON, D.C. 20505 0 7 OCT 1993 Dr. Joshua Lederberg President, The Rockfeller University Box 115 New York, NY 10021 Dear Dr. Lederberg: We have translated two paragraphs from the 1969 Literatur- naya Gazeta article that you called to our attention during your visit here on October 6. The second contains the material used by Dr. Alexsandrov in the address reported in Vestnik ANSSSR No. 6, 1981. As you can see, Alexsandrov selectively quoted from the Literaturnaya Gazeta article and, in doing so, distorted its meaning. The overall intent of reprinting your article and the accompanying commentary by Professor Badalyan in 1969 was clearly propagandistic (they appeared on a page entitled "Polemics"). We do not feel, however, that the presentation of your article was particularly unfavorable, nor did Professor Badalyan's commentary constitute a strong or unfair attack on you. Certainly it was within the bounds of debate that would be considered normal in the West. In summary, it appears that the fault in this matter lies with Dr. Alexsandrov in misrepresenting your position. A copy of your original article in Technology Week has been ordered from the Library of Congress. We will compare it with the version that appeared in Literaturnaya Gazeta and inform you whether the Russian translator seems to depart significantly in content or tone from the English.
