t. Ze 3 DEFARTHENT OF GENETICS Report! of Faculty Conmlt tee to make proposats for spece allocations and use tn Genetics Bullding tt fs expected that within the near future, the Veterinary Sclence Department, presently accommodated on the 2ad floor of the Genetics Autiding wit! be asstoned to other verterss The space vaceted by thet decartment has been assigned to the Genetics Depertment. This comeltiee was appotated by the Ceactics faculty to study the overall situetion, and to make proposale, ta regard to spece allocetions and use of afl space ta the Genetles Bulidtag when this additional space becomes avalleable. The commiféee recognizes thet tn Ets cresent cverters, the Genetics Department has been cramped tor space to an extreme de~ gree. It belleves that when the space on the Gnd floor now oecupled by the Veterfnery Sctence Departrent is elloceted to the Genetics Department considerable rellet should result, even tf aot to the extent destred by the staff. in recent yeors, the scope ond variety of the research orograms caereled on ia the Genetics Department has expended to aa extra- ordinary degree end hes resulted in tacreasiag demands for tpece and tactitittes. Along with this expansion, the number of graduate students has also Increased and has been another major tector contributing to the oresent serlously overcrowded sltue- thon. 4, Se Se w Fw The tacrease In the teaching program tn Cenetics at the undere graduate fevel hes created further difficulties ta respect te faciifttes and space. When this program overtexed the faciie ities tn the Genetics Bulldiag, provision wes made for Tf tn another temporary building, Ti7. While the commtitee belleves thet the undergradvate teach~ tag program would be more cfiective and provide @ more destreble sttuetion 14 It could be housed to the Genetics Bullding, It can see no feasible way of eccompiishiag this in the near future. Nevertheless the committee urges that this should be an ultimate objective of the Genetics Depertment. in developing the proposals contained in this report, the Com- mittee hes made strenuous efforts to consider, and assess, the varylag needs of the severel staff members. Following Its first consideration of the overall problem, It presented on Oct, 290h feo alternate and tentative proposels for the stati's considera- tions In the light of the collective discussion of these et thet time, end as a resuft of subsequent conferences with tndi- vidual steff membars, the committee now presents proposals which If belleves will provide the most widely acceptadle pien for the uftiization of spece tn the Genetics Bulldinge Though It has not been feastble to provide for the undergraduate teaching pregrem in the Genetics Bullding at this time, the come mittee shares the genera! epilation prevalling emoag the stetf thet a step in this direction should be taken by providing re- search laboratory fechifties In Room BIY for Ore Je Fe Crom and his graduate students. Te 8. ae The committee belheves thet Tf the Department supports @ pro- gram ta a major degrea tf should make every effort to provide at icast @ minimum of teciifties for tt, untess these needs con be satistied la other directions. As with many departments of the College of Agriculture, the Department of Genetics pero tictoetes to several programs thet ere Interdepaertmental In nature. For verying reasons, such programs sometimes encounter added difficulties when spece Is at ¢ cramtum, Among others, the potato research program was established on ¢ cov~operative basis between the Genetica Cepartment end two other departmentae tts budget factifttes are flarcsely Ja the Genetles Department, bul It has used work spece and feciiities In the besement of the tortleviture Gulldings, Other recent de~ velopmentsy In that bullding promlae to serlously reduce, if not eliminate, the taciitttes ustil recently avatieble In thet building to the potato programs in view of Its cartier lavest= ment tn needed feciiittes ia the Harticulture fullding, the Commalttee urges the leadership of the petato project te make every effort through the appropriste administrative chensels, to restore, or otherwise provide factitttes edequate tor tts mint- mum needs. It does not appear teasible at this time to provide certetn of these tn the Genetics Bullding, though ff ts recone mended that general Laboratory factiities ta temporery bulldtag TI7C be shared by the undergredvate teachtag program and the poteto profect. This eppesrs to be an eatirely feasible prow cedure, De 10, ile a tf and when a potete cyfole gist ts re-appointed tn the Genetics Department If ts racommended that he be housed tn the general cytelogical tacilities suggested for rooms ICtA, 102, 103. white there Is aot complete agreement emong stett members Ian ree spect fo the seads for @ general laboratory, majority optalon appeers to favor such @ development, Aecordiagly, Room Z2tl ts proposed for this purpose, fo be eveliable fo the whole depert- meat without specific eassignment. Such @ laboratory In confunc~ tlon with R20BA would also serve the needs of the sweet clover project aad release soace In the taboratory ia #7 now used by this pregram. Slace R2If ts # large room if should also be feasi- ble to locate some student desks in If, of otherwise to provide work space for occartonal needs. Room 208A would require some slight alteretion to fit It tor the purpose previously mentioned « ia eddition thle room could be used for compullisg purposes, la respect to general student desk spece, ft Is prasosed that rooms 213, 213A be used for this purpose. It may be advisable fo remove the femporary type partition between these two rooms, Alt proposed uses and allocetiors of space ere indicated tn the Sabulation which Is a part of this report. ‘Several of the pro posals have received ano special comment, bul the canclttee be Hleves they “re As accord with general departmental desires In ettecting consideretion. of the several fines of resesreh effort as well @s ta providing meximur use of al! the spece tn the most efflctent manner, tn order to provide some degree of flexibility ake for the future, it is proposed theft for the presen? room 206 remain on an wnsastagned basis, 19, The committee recommends thet ta respect to unassigned spece in the Genetics Sullding, the determination for utilization of such spece be made on an anavel basis by @ decartmental come mittee but aubject to feculty sopraval. t3. The commlftee recommends that tactilttes now available to the Genetics Vepertsent In fhe Old tnzyme Laberetory be refaineds The committee recognizes that these proposals deo not provide each end every member of the department with all the space he would destre for his work and Sie students. The stadf will ecknowledge thet with so many fines of spectalized endeavor, and with soace at such & premium, If would not be poestbie fa completely satisty the maximum demands that prevell. The comatttee hopes that the proposals it presents for consideration wlll recetve general sccestance, recognizing thet with @ spirit of good will and mutuelifty of tater- ests in promoting the waltare of the whole depertment, they do pro- vide e¢ substantial measure of relief for the fufure. We are al! keenly awere that space and tacilittes have been, and are now, 6 major problem in the whole Institution. It Is probable thet this sttuettion will prevall for quite sometime in the veers ahead. it ts natural thet this abould be so tn an institution such es the University of Wisconsia that hes such a Sroad bese of educations! and research endeavor. Fith tastitutions, es with organises, growth is @ concomitant of viteallty. As members of the Separtment of Genetics, collectively ead ladividuelly, we should reessess pertod-+ ficelly our several present tines of endeavor, cerefully aeppreise ~ & = proposed new efforts and restrict If necessary, the number of graduate students thet we accept. tf we do this, we shall perhaps avold some of the pressures and oblications that cannot be met with @ substantial measure of satistaction to ourselves, to the depart- ment and to the institution as @ whole. To do this, need not neces sarily mean thet we cease to grow. Indeed It may well result Ja an Increased vitelify and in a strenghtening of the department's total progrem.
