THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Madison 6 DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS September 8, 1947 ALBMAIL Dr. Joshua Lederberg c/o Dr. F. J. Ryan Department of Zoology Columbia University New York 27, N. Y. Dear Dr. Lederberg: Although I hope to take a few more days! vacation, I returned to the office this morning temporarily to check on the progress being made with reference particularly to living accommodations for you and the orders for laboratory equipment and supplies. Mrs. Stemm of the Housing Bureau tells me that she wrote you late in August regarding prospects for an avartment. Since there is nothing definite in view at present she urges that as soon as you arrive in Madison you get in touch with her office. It is the policy of the Housing Bureau to give priority to persons of professorial rank, so that you are in line for anything that may be available. It is extreme- ly doubtful that Mrs. Stemm will have a place waiting for you when you arrive so that you should make your plans accordingly. Requisitions have been issued for various supplies for the micro- biology laboratory. Dr. Irwin, who has been looking after the matter during my vacation, is completing arrangements for the purchase of a Coolerator to be fitted up as an incubator as per his recent corres- pondence with you. I hope before the day is over to place a requisition for a refrigerator. Prospects for delivery on the latter item are about six weeks. I regret to say that it is not the policy of the University to pay traveling expenses of new appointees. Looking forward to your joining us soon, I am Sincerely yours, R. A. Brink Professor of Genetics RAB/s
