Dear Professor Lederberg:

I have been thinking that Dr. Maclyn McCarty's recent
book, The Transforming Principle : Discovering that Genes are

made of wie Jenwal of Geeta 3, reviewed or commented
upon in the Journal of Genetics. Since this momentous work

was done in the Rockeféiler Institute and because it was
done by pioneers who were considered medical bacteriologists,
it occurred to me that you might wish to comment upon these

extraordinary men, their work and the curious reception

their work received. I remember reading a lengthy reference

to Avery's work in an article by you in a Rockefeller University
publication and this is an additional reason for my writing

to you. On the other hand, if you do not wish to write about |
this topic at this time, could you suggest someone who might ?
