Columbia Cnibersity inthe City of Mew Pork DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY November 12, 1957 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin Dear Josh: Our Department of Zoology is faced with the pros- pect of securing two or more staff members during the next two years. As you may know, John Gregg is now at Duke and Franz Schrader retires at the end of the 1958~ 1959 academic year. There is further a likelihood that we will be able to employ an additional man. There are, of course, limitations on rank and we would be able to offer an Associate Professorship only if we were mighty certain about the quality of our choice. More likely the appointments would be at the Assistant Professor's level with a salary ranging between $5500 and $7000, Although appointments in chemical embryology and chromosome cytology have been or will be vacated, and al- though we would hope to get someone who can help with our undergraduate teaching, these considerations need not dic- tate our selection. We frankly feel that we must be very careful in these appointments to secure men of real dis-= tinction; certainly the appointees should be expected to develop into biologists better than any of us now on the staff. Of course we realize how hard it is to recognize true promise in a young scientist and we would appreciate, therefore, your advice, With all best wishes, Sincerely yours, —hhners Francis J.
