Capy “Jl-eecA August 14, 1978 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Rockefeller University New York, New York 10021 Dear Dr. Lederberg: The Board of Directors is pleased--to invite you to become a member of the National Committee on United States- China Relations. On their behalf, I am delighted to inform you of this decision, and hope that you will accept our invitation. Founded in 1966, the Committee is comprised of some 500 distinguished scholars, businessmen, and professional and civic leaders throughout the nation who share a belief that increased public understanding of China and U.S.-China relations is essential to the effective conduct of the nation's foreign policy. The Committee takes no policy positions, but seeks to stimulate public interest in a variety of ways. Our major focus now is on facilitating educational, civic affairs, cultural and sports exchanges between China and the United States. We also engage in exchange-related educational activities by sponsoring public meetings, symposia and workshops, distributing reference materials, and providing a range of advisory services on China to other organizations. Enclosed are the Committee's Annual Report for Fiscal Year 1977, a brochure describing our work, and the most recent issue of our quarterly newsletter. Exchanges under the Committee's auspices this year have included visits to China by the U.S. women's volleyball team and a delegation of local education leaders. The National Committee acted as host for a U.S. tour this spring by the China International Travel Service (Luxingshe) and this summer co-sponsored with the Metropolitan Opera Association our largest exchange to date--the 150-member Performing Arts Company of the People's Republic of China. This fall we will be sending to China a delegation of civic affairs leaders and will receive from China a delegation of municipal adminis- trators and the Chinese men's and women's basketball teams. In addition to these facilitated exchanges, the National Committee for the first time has been invited by Luxingshe to form two delegations of Committee members and spouses who will, at their own expense, travel to China during the months of October and December. cccighd Ih Page 2 It is our hope that members will participate in the Committee's meetings and in local exchange-related programs. Members receive the quarterly newsletter, "Notes from the National Committee," and periodic mailings of articles and reference materials we hope will be of interest. No annual dues are assessed, but members are invited to make voluntary contributions and to render whatever services they can in furthering the Committee's objectives. I sincerely hope that you will join us, indicating through membership your interest in the National Committee's work and support of its objectives.
