Dear Dr. Lederberg:

We would be honored to have you deliver a workshop
presentation on the 5th of October, the opening day of our Fourth
Annual CSIS National Leadership Forum in Washington, Dc.

The forum will bring together senior leaders from business,
government and academia to examine: "The Technological
Revolution: Implications for America's Place in the World." This
theme encompasses issues of crucial importance to the economic
health and defense of our nation. The forum will receive wide
media coverage, and we expect it to help draw attention to these
issues on the 1988 political agenda.

In the past three years the National Leadership Forum has
been addressed by leaders of both political parties, including
President Reagan. Other speakers have included Zbigniew
Brzezinski, Henry Kissinger, Jeane Kirkpatrick and James
Schlesinger. Your panel workshop audience on the 5th of October
will include some fifty knowledgeable people.

We would like for you to participate as a presenter for the
workshop on "Biotechnology/Bionics." We expect the presenters
to speak for 20 to 25 minutes on the workshop topic, and be
available to field questions from the audience. We will take
another 20 to 30 minutes for questions and discussion.

If you are able to participate, we will coordinate with your
staff regarding details and logistics. I have enclosed a
proposed agenda. This planning document will give you an idea of
the substantive scope of the forum. I have also enclosed a flyer
highlighting events at one of our previous forums.
