It certainly has been startling to me that the investment that would now be required for setting up a laboratory for synthesis of genes would probably be no more expensive (in fact, could easily be less expensive) what the pharma— ceutical houses have probably had to invest to manu- facture any one of the synthetic vitamins or hormones.
