Thank you very much for sending me copies of some

of your recent writings. JI appreciate this and would
be glad to continue receiving copies of your writings
in the future as well.

In particular, as regards the question of artificial
laboratory syntheses of genes, I am glad you point

out how easy it could be for a small scale industrial
operation to carry this out. It certainly has been
startling to me that the investment that would now

be required for setting up a laboratory for synthesis
of genes would probably be no more expensive (in fact,
could easily be less expensive) what the pharma—
ceutical houses have probably had to invest to manu-
facture any one of the synthetic vitamins or hormones.
