JUN 27 1269 INTERNATIONAL SPONSORSHIP COMMITTEE a mS For The 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE Dr. Joshua Lederberg ee May 2, 1969 Professor of Genetics Stanford University Medical School Stanford, California 94305 Dear Dr. Lederberg: May we invite you to serve as a member of a Sponsoring Committee to mark the 25th Anniversary, in November, 1969, of the Weizmann Institute of Science of Rehovot, Israel? As you know, it is devoted to fundamental scientific research whose focus is human advancement. In this 25 year period it has grown to be one of the great research Institutes of the world, unique in its combination of high level teaching and research over a great range of scientific knowledge. A series of functions is being arranged in the Fall of 1969, to continue through the Spring of 1970, in Rehovot and New York, to celebrate the Anniversary; and also to pay tribute to the Institute's President and principal architect, Meyer W. Weisgal, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. The Institute's record of services to science, and through science, to the State of Israel; and its recognition by the international scientific community, notable on its merits, is the more remarkable by reason of its birth and rapid growth in a pioneering country without a scientific tradition. In 1967, after a two and one-half year study of the Institute's work, a Survey Commission of scientists, on which two of us served, concluded that: "The Weizmann Institute is one of the world's truly eminent scientific research centers in science...It has been a privilege for us to examine at close hand a world famous scientific Institute that has reached such eminence in just 20 years in a pioneering country. It is an achievement that is probably unparalleled in world history." In Rehovot, the Anniversary period will be inaugurated in the Fall of 1969 by a series of scientific workshops, followed by a number of festive programs be- ginning on November 2. In New York, a Dinner on October 21 will honor both the Institute and Meyer Weisgal, to be followed in the Spring by a forum on the role of science in resolving a number of human problems. Participants in this forum, we anticipate, will include Weizmann Institute scientists and others from major centers in the United States and abroad. This deserved tribute to a vital scientific Institute, in which we hope you will join, will provide encouragement in broadening the horizons and potentials of science, including their peaceful objectives. We hope to receive your accep- tance at an early moment. The enclosed card is for your convenience.
