A few years ago you and Kenneth Warren attended a scientific meeting in Trieste - I believe. Amongst the speakers was an Ethiopian scientist, Dr Tilahun Yilma, who has made a most effective recombinant vaccine against rinderpest and is presently undertaking something equally effective - so I understand - with a recombinant AIDS vaccine. He is giving the Keynote Address at a conference on AIDS sponsored by the Pasteur Institute. Ken Warren tells me that you and he were both very impressed with his presentation and work. I think he is a most remarkable man and that his story is eminently worth telling - being an inspiration not only to Americans but to fellow Ethiopians, and to young scientists. This isn't your usual gee-whizz discovery where concepts are overturned overnight. But, like the work that underwrote the oral rehydration therapy, I think this is not only brilliant, but also of enormous importance to people on other continents. I wonder if I could ask a great favor? Would you be willing to read through the manuscript and give me a quotation that we could use on the jacket of the book? Senator David Boren of Oklahoma has agreed to do this, as well as Dr Mary Catherine Bateson. Ihave kept my writing: I can't seem to stop, and I am glad, because I enjoy it so much.
