Over the past several years, Bernie Davis waged a courageous battle with cancer. On
January 14th, at the age of 78, Bernie passed away.

As you well know, Bernie, a pioneer in bacterial genetics research, enjoyed a long and
illustrious career, highlighted by his discoveries concerning how genes are regulated in
bacteria. He was among the first to use penicillin to isolate mutants; he and his collaborators
also discovered crucial aspects of the ways that bacteria synthesize proteins and develop
resistance to drugs and on the ways that streptomycin and other antibiotics kill bacteria.
Along the way, Bernie Davis trained many scientists whose work continues to break new
ground.

Several years ago, when Bernie Davis retired, a fellowship was established in his name.
More than $65,000 has been raised with initial gifts. As former students, friends and/or
colleagues of Bernie, we believe there can be no better way to honor Bernie’s memory, than
to complete the fundraising for The Bernard D. Davis Fellowship Fund. On May Ist, there
will be a memorial service for Bernie Davis at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
On that day, we would like to be able to announce that we Had raised another $200,000.

The Bernie Davis Fellow would be selected among postdoctoral fellows in the Department of
Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School.

Please join us in creating a lasting endowment in Bernie’s name. Your generous
