Dear Professor Lederberg,

It was with very great interest indeed
that I read recently, in the Brisbane press, a report of an
address you gave at a Symposium on Genetics. I am sure you will
understand my interest because you would understand the implications
of the name of our Association.

Part of the report read:

"Professor Lederberg outlined two types of genetic
intervention that he believes ‘technically poss-
ible' within ‘a few years'.

One is the use of special viruses to introduce
new genes into the victims of inherited diseases."

This seems to me (and I am neither a Medical Practitioner
nor a scientist) to provide great hope for the children, and their
parents, who suffer from cystic fibrosis. I wonder would you please
be kind enough to elaborate a little on this and give us some
more details? *

One of our important services to our Members, and indeed to
quite a number of Australian Doctors, is a periodical Newsletter
giving news on the latest developments in treatment of, and
research into, cystic fibrosis. Anything you could tell us about
your work would be read with the most avid interest, I can assure
you.
