Dear Dr. Lederberg:
I keenly appreciate your reply to my letter of July ll.

You are, as I suspected that you would be, a reasonable
man. Your reply indicates that the areas of agreement
between us are greater than those in which we differ.

Dr. Dubos' letter did indicate to me that NRDC advocates
the total abolition of strip mining and with this I disagree.
The evidence suggests to me that there will be passed in
the Congress legislation that will control surface mining,
and my view would be to give the legislative process a
chance to function before pursuing the litigatory proceedings,
but here you and I may have an honest and understandable
difference of opinion.

It has been my hope that matters of important public policy
could be decided by reasonable men examining facts and
reasoning together in the hope of finding the best answer from
the standpoint of the public interest. I cannot help but feel
that this process will serve society better in the long run

than confrontation in which each side expresses extreme views
in inflammatory language.

From our exchange of correspondence I respect your views,
even though we differ on some points. I am appreciative of
your suggestion that I might be allowed to furnish a rebuttal
statement. However, I am content to let the matter rest with
this exchange of correspondence between us.
