Public Health Service policy requires that support for research carried
out in countries outside of the United States shall be limited to three
years, except under very unusual circumstances. Thus, we encourage
grantees to seek continued support for their programs within their own
«ctional resources, It is not intended or desired that the United States
v.site Health Service should provide for the support of individual
~oreign research programs on a permanent basis, We have recently
reviewed your grant GM 08293-03, and find that two more years of previ-
ously recommended support will be made available to you provided adequate
funds are appropriated, which will provide you with a total of five

years of support. We take this opportunity to bring this policy to your
attention so that you may have ample time to seek support from sources
other than the United States Public Health Service.

It is a pleasure to have been able to extend support for your highly
regarded program. I hope you will be successful in obtaining continuing
support from other sources in order to permit yotr research to develop
