UNITED STATES INFORMATION AGENCY — =~ WASHINGTON June 24, 1960 Dear Dr. Lederberg: As you know, the U. 5. Information Agency is engaged in telling the story of America to the rest of the world. In this connection we make considerable use of photographs in our U.5.1.5. publications and to illustrate suitable feature articles for distribution to the press of other countries. As part of our program we would like to use the article "Great American Scientist: "The Biologists" which appeared in the June 1960 issue of "Fortune". We have received permission from "Fortune" magazine to use the article, and will obtain the photographs from them upon receipt of your permission. At this time we are planning to include your picture in one of our U.S.1I.S. publications, "Al-Hayat", a magazine that presents America in Arabic language. It is distributed in the Near East, Africa and India. We will then place the photograph in our library file for possible future use in our overseas program. If you grant this permission, would you kindly sign the copy of the letter and return it in the enclosed self addressed envelope. Your cooperation with the Agency is greatly appreciated. Sincerely yours, elby/B. th Visual Materials Branch Editorial Division Press and Publications Service Enclosure: self addressed envelope Dr. Joshua Lederberg Medical Center Stanford University Palo Alto, Califomia Ith
