Dear Barton:

Thank you for the introduction to the reissue of "Inborn
Factors in Disease".

It is a very fine analysis and I have hardly any comments.

I would say that Stent grossly understates the hetero eneity
of science and especially as this is divided among its disciplines.

You touch upon this; but if anything that may deserve a little
bit more emphasis. Geneticists were not generally expected to
know. much chemistry, nor vice versa, at a time when there was
little "genetic chemistry" to study -- a vicious cycle.

Contrary to your page 12 it is this social organization of
science rather than the technology of communication that has
changed in modern times.

Page 14: perhaps you would also want to add that his books
were in fact reissued over some period of time during Garrod's
lifetime. It would be helpful if there were a complete bibli-
ography of Garrod's work on this subject including these kinds
of details like new editions and so forth.
