My re~reading it on the eve of our public announcement of the estab- lishment of a Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine (see enclosed “ Campus Report) prompts my letter to ask if you would be willing to revisit this topic for a future issue of Stanford Medicine. The proposed article should treat the topic in light of the latest developments in molecular biology, with special emphasis both on the scientific challenges ahead, and implications for patients and sociéty at large. The previous article discussed these, but I think presently we are entering a stage in which the social and ethical factors of the con- templated therapies will require the involvement and education of the public in a way it has never been attempted before. Your previous article is farsighted in its predictions and right on the mark. The proposed article will provide the bridge to the next stage of the science and its applications. If you decide to write the article, bear in mind that most of our 40,000-plus readers are laymen, including influential people in government, and legislatures. The writing style should be no different to that which you used in your Washington Post columns. Joshua Lederberg, Ph.D. May 23, 1985 Page 2 of 2 We want to give you as much time as possible to think about the subject so we have two alternatives for scheduling the article: the Winter 1986 issue whose copy deadline is November 1, 1985 or the Spring 1986 issue whose copy deadline is March 1, 1986. Let me know if you are interested and if so, which of these options is the most convenient. I look forward to hearing from you. Cordially, Sfyros Andreopoulos Editor, Stanford Medicine SA: jk
