Dear Dr. Lederberg:

On the weekend of April 12th, AAAS moved into its new headquarters, the Center for
Science and Engineering. Facilities there, particularly the designated public spaces, will increase
greatly the role of AAAS. Located near Metro Center and in close proximity to the White House
and Capitol Hill, the building will host many meetings on aspects of science, engineering, and
public policy.

The Center’s 180 seat auditorium will have splendid audio-visual facilities and be the
frequent scene of important events affecting the future of society. It will quickly attain an aura
of greatness. Adding to its distinction will be that some of the seats in the facility will bear
important names, among them Vannevar Bush, James Shannon, Mary Lasker, Luis Alvarez,
William O. Baker, Caryl Haskins and Merle Tuve. Your presence there would add special luster
to the scene. From now until July 15, 1996, I am prepared personally to contribute $1,000 of
the $5,000 required to reserve a place for you. This would be in addition to substantial
contributions I have made already to the AAAS Center for Science and Engineering.

The seats will have a plaque with the honoree’s name. The name will also be seen at the
enirance to the auditorium. This is an opportunity that will not last. Please join others and me

in creating a great auditorium.
