27th October 1959 ISTITUTO DI GENETICA Professor J. Lederberg, UNIVERSITA DI PAVIA Department of Genetics, po University of Stanford PAVEA Medical Center, VIA SANT’ EPIFANIO, 14 - TEL, 23,029 Stanford, California Dear Joshua, I was very pleased to receive youtletter in time for providing Giovanni, who left yesterday, with the relevant information. Giovanni is due to arrive in Berkezey on Tuesday, November 10th, and will call you to arrange a meeting with you before the 14th. He will know, by that time, the reaction of the other end of Interist and will be able to tell you more about our present setuP and possibilities of increasing it. I agree with all your letter, including the possibility of a visit of yours to Bloomfield. I simply mention” it because I anticipate that Schering will be interested to meet you and have youX visit their labs; of course your visit might take place only if they ask for it, and only when convenient to you. Fortunately, the Vice President of Schering, Waterman, who deals with research, is a very pleasant and intelligent man, himself a successful research chemist some time ago (vitamin B} ). , Did you advise me to attend the SGM Symposium or the space biology meeting, or both? I may be attending the SGli meeting as I have an invitation to go to Cambridge if I can make dates combine. It might give Alba a chance to see England and friends again. Naturally we would very much like to see you here in transit to or from Nice. I am giving spearately some information on the Milan-Nice trip. Concerning the course: it would certainly ease me to drop part or all of the physiological genetics, where I am weakest. However, the dates of the Geneva Seminar, whieh I believed had been fixed, are liable to be changed from what I have lately been told, and as I have a definite interest in attending it, in view of future developments, I cannot as yet ma;,e detailed plans. The 3 technique seems to work now, so do not bother to give Giovanni ingredients for EM, EMS media. May I ask you to give Giovanni strains useful for repeating the “double entry" experiment unless you have new information or plans making the repetition and further development uninteresting. Essentially, a Gal-Lp®fry- female is what is needed, as well as the Hfro strain giving double entry. I do not recall the strain numbers and have no copy of the detailed experiments. All the best, and perhaps I'll be seeing you both soon, although at separate times. Yours, isin
