Dear Professor Lederberg:

I was delighted to learn of your election to the Presidency of
Rockefeller University. Having just returned from a rather hectic ten
days out-of-town trip I hasten to send you my warmest congratulations
and good wishes on this well-deserved appointment. Rockefeller University
is indeed fortunate to have gained the leadership of a scholar of such
international repute and high academic standing who is also a scientist
known for his deep commitment to improving the interrelationship between
science and our society.

Cornell University and, in particular, its Medical College, has
enjoyed a long and close relationship with Rockefeller University and
your selection to succeed Dr. Seitz can only serve to enhance these ties.
On behalf of the entire Cornell community I should like to offer heartiest
congratulations and all good wishes for success and fulfillment in your
new endeavor. I look forward with great pleasure to meeting you at some
point in the near future when we are both in New York City and when your
time permits. I should like to bring our Provost for Medical Affairs,
Dr. Theodore Cooper, so that we might both have an opportunity to meet
